Summary

The project consists of the expansion of sandpit NEM-100B from the current 2.9 hectares to increase the total area of the operating area to approximately 5.8 hectares. The proponent holds a non-exclusive operating lease and a certificate of exemption, issued by the Eeyou Istchee James Bay Regional Government, which was obtained on May 1, 2024.

The main objective of the project is to meet the community of Nemaska’s growing need for sand and gravel in the short and medium term. The NEM-100B sandpit is one of the few in the region to contain good quality MG-112 sand, which is highly sought after for the construction, maintenance and paving of roads and parking lots, as well as for various municipal works. The proponent estimates that the expansion would provide between 70,000 and 100,000 m3 of sand. The volumes of material produced annually, the methods of extraction and production of aggregates, as well as the mode of transporting the materials, will resemble what they have been in recent years. The associated infrastructure, such as the access road and storage areas, is already in place, which would prevent further encroachment.
