Summary

The proponent wants to develop a sand pit at the WA-25 site, which is located approximately 2 km south of the Waskaganish access road, at km 30. The community of Waskaganish is planning new subdivisions, roads and maintenance work in the coming years. No aggregate sources are currently available on the community’s Category I lands. Waskaganish therefore mandated Poly-Geo to identify new granular deposits on Category II land near the Waskaganish access road.

The proposed site is sand-only, unlike other potential sites, which contain a mix of sand and gravel. The sand pit is separated into the three cells (A, B and C) that have already been deforested, but may still require additional clearing. Cell C occupies an area of about 8 ha with an average material thickness of 2 m. However, due to the shallow depth of the watertable on a portion of the site, the proponent plans to exploit less than 3 hectares. It is planned to extract about 20,000 m3 of sand. An access road connecting cells WA-25-B and WA-25-C with a length of 685m will be necessary for the operation of the site.
