Summary
The project aims for the construction of a wind farm made up of 21 wind turbines with a total capacity of 126 MW. The expected annual energy production is 426,373 MWh, which will cover the totality of the mine’s needs. The generators will only be used as a backup if there is a breakdown.
The wind turbines selected for the implementation of the wind farm are Enercon-175, which can generate a power of 6 MW. This model was specifically chosen for its resistance to extreme conditions such as temperatures below -20 degrees. The towers are 112 m high and are made of hybrid steel. The blades are built with a GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) sandwich structure and CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) spar booms and they have a length of 85.98 m. Their technology includes a heating process to prevent frost. The rotor’s diameter is 175m and the swept ground area is 24 784 m².
The wind turbines will be separated from each other by a distance of 1 km to limit the wake effect. The maximum sound level at rated capacity is 106.9 dBA. The wind turbines will be connected by strings of 3 or 4 to the electrical point that is already used for Troilus’ facilities. This will ensure power consistency even if a turbine is dysfunctional. This interconnection will require around 65 km of power cable.
The wind turbines have a minimum lifespan of 25 years, the dismantling efforts will thus be combined with those of the mine. If the life of the mine is extended, efforts will be made to extend the life of the wind project’s equipment.
