Summary

The Corvette Mine Project is located 250 km east of the community of Radisson, on Category III land. The project is also located on the common boundaries of three Cree communities: Chisasibi (330 km to the west), Wemindji (330 km to the southwest) and Mistissini (350 km to the south). The project involves the exploitation of an open pit spodumene (lithium) pegmatite deposit for an estimated lifespan of 23 years. The mine complex will consist of a variety of infrastructure, including an access road to the mine site from the Transtaïga Highway, a worker camp, waste rock, tailings and ore storage areas, an ore processing plant, and a water treatment plant.

Update : The proponent presents the modifications made to the mining project since the issuance of the impact study directive. The two main changes are the adoption of the name Shaakichiuwaanaan, which replaces the name Corvette, and the update of the mining method.

The proposed mining method has been updated to address the concerns of the Cree communities regarding the project’s impact on fish and water bodies. Mining was to be carried out from an open-pit mine sequenced in three phases. The encroachment of the pit on a lake would have resulted in a significant loss of wetlands and water bodies as well as fish habitat. The proponent now plans to exploit the deposit from an open pit, as well as an underground mine. The main advantage of this will be to reduce the amount of waste extracted, as well as decrease the project’s footprint on the environment, particularly in wetlands.
